In mid-October, we were excited to welcome the film crew from Lively Media of Toronto to the ranch. The crew was there to film a segment for an upcoming episode on the TV show “The Chef's Domain”.
Chef Hayato Okamitsu, a SAIT Culinary instructor and renowned Calgary chef, is the featured chef in this episode. We had a great time with Chef Okamitsu who came to our ranch to go for a horseback ride with us through our cattle while discussing raising natural beef and then selecting a few products to use in the show. (Here's a recent article about Chef Okamitsu in FFWD Magazine.)
A few days later, we met downtown Calgary at the new SAIT culinary campus where filming resumed and Chef Okamitsu prepared a three-course meal using ingredients he selected from the featured local producers: Chinook Honey, Popular Bluff Farm potatoes and Flying Heart Natural Beef.
Six local chefs, Calgary food critic John Gilchrist, administration from SAIT school, Rod and myself along with Cheri & Art Andrews (Chinook Honey) and Cam Beard & Rosemary Wotske (Popular Bluff Farms) were treated to an AMAZING three-course meal made from these local ingredients. The presentation was stunning, and the flavours were beyond delicious.
The show will air in the summer of 2013. We can't wait to watch the show and re-live this incredible experience! Our sincere thanks go to the "Chef's Domain" crew, Chef Okamitsu and everyone involved in creating this show which serves to showcase the bounty of local food producers across this country. Cheers!
